Quay Timber has been upping its machining game producing its own newel posts to ensure quality and consistency for its customers. The most recent addition to Quay Timber's personal stock production are newel posts suitable for decking.

What are newel posts?

Newel posts are an upright posts designed to add support to bannister and handrail structures. These posts are designed for structural integrity to prevent railings from collapsing under weight, dividing the spindels into sections and adding a more complete look to any outdoor deck or indoor stair bannister.

Why buy newel posts from Quay Timber?

There's nothing worse than building an entire deck and then realising that one post is misshapen or damaged. Quay Timber's newel posts are machined with every piece of wood being carefully inspected before cutting to ensure quality and strenght. This prevents more trips out for extra wood to fill in the gaps and allows more time to be spent enjoying your efforts in the garden.

How are the newels made?

First, Kyle starts with standard square edge redwood. The standard measurements for these are 83x83mm. The posts are given a pyramid bevel at one end using a chop saw for a nice tapered effect.

Then a router is used to carve out two decorative kerfs in the top of the newel. This breaks up the line of the wood and draws the eye upwards. It's all about the details!

Kyle can methodically machine hundreds of these every day to give perfect results to our customers. Check out our facebook account for more images and videos of the process.
